Pride Awareness March

Sunday, June 13, 2010
12PM

Pittsburgh’s first Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade occurred on June 17, 1973 and had 150 participants.  This year, we’re pleased to announce that over 100 organizations and groups will be participants representing hundreds of people.  Led by the Dykes on Bikes contingent, this year’s parade participants will consist of a caravan of LGBT organizations, community groups, corporations, and politicians.

The Grand Marshal’s for the Pride Awareness March are Chuck Tierney and Chuck Honse, who both operated the Holiday Bar in Oakland for 30 years until they retired in 2007.  During its heyday, the Holiday Bar united the gay community by dispelling myths and recruiting volunteers for the nation’s first major AIDS research study, now known as the Pitt Men’s Study.  Chuck and Chuck also operated a number of other businesses including the former New York New York (now 5801) in Shadyside, Auntie Mame’s in downtown (now Images) and the former 4th Avenue Stock Exchange.

In addition to serving on the Board of Directors for many organizations, Chuck and Chuck are also founding members of both the Lambda Foundation and Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh.
